Travelling between Tromsø and Lofoten can be much more than a transfer.
Spend at least three nights in Tromsø before collecting your rental car and travelling south through Kvaløya to Senja. Follow the Norwegian Scenic Route across Senja, cross by summer ferry to Andøya and continue through Vesterålen before reaching Lofoten.
Rather than trying to cover Northern Norway as quickly as possible, this journey gives you time to experience the destinations along the way — with fjord landscapes, fishing communities, wildlife, scenic coastal roads and long summer evenings.
We recommend at least three nights in Tromsø, one night on Senja, one night in Vesterålen and four nights in Lofoten. Add additional nights on Senja or in Vesterålen if you want a slower journey, hiking, whale watching or more time exploring the islands.

This independent summer road trip connects Tromsø and Lofoten through Senja, Andøya and Vesterålen, turning the journey itself into one of the highlights of the trip.
Begin with three nights in Tromsø, giving you two full days for the city and surrounding fjords before you start driving.
On Day 4, collect your rental car and travel across Kvaløya to the Brensholmen–Botnhamn ferry. From Botnhamn, follow the outer coast of Senja before continuing to Gryllefjord. The seasonal Gryllefjord–Andenes ferry then connects Senja with Andøya. Follow Norwegian Scenic Route Andøya south through Vesterålen before continuing towards Lofoten. Once in Lofoten, allow at least four nights. Use this itinerary as a framework rather than a rigid schedule. Ferry timetables, weather and the amount of time you want to spend exploring should determine your exact pace.

Arrive in Tromsø and check into your accommodation.
Tromsø is Northern Norway’s largest visitor hub and offers one of the widest selections of guided experiences in the region, making it a natural place to begin the journey before collecting your rental car. The compact city centre is easy to explore on foot, and many organised experiences include transport from central meeting points. A rental car is therefore unnecessary for the first three days of this itinerary.
Spend your arrival day around the harbour and city centre, then use your two full days to combine Tromsø itself with the surrounding Arctic landscapes.

Discover the harbour, museums and city neighbourhoods, visit the Arctic Cathedral or take Fjellheisen for panoramic views across Tromsøya, surrounding islands, mountains and fjords. Because the road trip takes you west across Kvaløya towards Brensholmen on Day 4, you will already experience part of the coastal landscape outside Tromsø independently. Use your two full days in Tromsø for experiences that add something different to the journey — explore the city, join a fjord cruise or spend time with the huskies.

Day 4 – Drive from Tromsø to Senja
Today the road trip itself begins. Collect your rental car in Tromsø and travel west across Kvaløya towards Brensholmen. From here, take the ferry to Botnhamn on northern Senja and begin one of the most scenic sections of the journey. Norwegian Scenic Route Senja follows the island’s dramatic outer coast between Botnhamn and Gryllefjord. Mountains rise sharply from the sea, with beaches, fjords, viewpoints and small coastal communities spread along the route. Check the current Brensholmen–Botnhamn ferry timetable before departure.
Drive Norwegian Scenic Route Senja
Botnhamn – Mefjordvær – Ersfjordstranda – Tungeneset – Bergsbotn – Gryllefjord
From Botnhamn, follow the outer coast towards Gryllefjord. The road passes some of Senja’s most dramatic scenery: mountains rising directly from the sea, deep fjords, Arctic beaches and small fishing communities. Short detours lead to Husøy and Mefjordvær.

Stop at the 44-metre viewing platform high above Bergsfjord for one of the most impressive panoramas along the route.
Allow More Time Than the Map Suggests
The Scenic Route itself is only 102 km, but distance is a poor guide to how long you should allow. Parts of the road are narrow and winding, with tunnels, limited sight lines and sections where the mountain and coastline leave little space around the carriageway. Side roads towards some villages can be narrower still. Summer brings motorhomes, cyclists and heavy sightseeing traffic, particularly around the major viewpoints. Do not rush. The purpose of choosing Senja is precisely to travel slowly and experience the landscape.
How Long Should You Spend on Senja?
One Night
Spend your first day travelling from Tromsø onto Senja and explore part of the Scenic Route before staying around Mefjordvær, Skaland, Hamn or the western side of the island. Continue towards Gryllefjord the following day.
Two or More Nights
Add additional nights if you want to hike, explore southern Senja or simply travel at a slower pace.
Senja has several excellent mountain routes, including Hesten and Husfjellet, but weather should determine your hiking plans rather than a tightly fixed schedule. Take time to explore the south of the island, with its national park and scenic coastal villages. Extra time gives you flexibility if low cloud, rain or wind make your preferred hike unsuitable.
Senja Alternative
If you want to experience Senja but don’t have time for Andøya and Vesterålen, you can still include part of the island. Travel from Tromsø via Brensholmen and Botnhamn, drive along the west coast of Senja, then turn inland on Fv. 86 towards Finnsnes and Bardufoss before rejoining the E6/E10 route towards Lofoten. This avoids the seasonal and busy Gryllefjord–Andenes ferry.

Continue west to Gryllefjord and take the summer ferry across Andfjorden to Andenes.
This ferry is the key connection that makes the complete Tromsø – Senja – Andøya – Vesterålen – Lofoten road trip possible. The crossing takes around two hours. Vehicle capacity is limited and booking arrangements can vary by season. Check the current ferry information before travelling and arrive with a comfortable margin before departure.
Important
Don’t plan to arrive at Gryllefjord only a few minutes before departure. This is a very popular summer ferry and queues can form. Build flexibility into the day in case you need to wait for a later crossing. Check the current Gryllefjord–Andenes ferry timetable before travelling.

From the ferry terminal in Andenes, decide where you want to spend your Vesterålen night.

Choose to stay overnight in Andenes if whale watching and the landscapes of northern Andøya are your priorities.

Choose Sortland if you want a more central base for exploring Vesterålen. From here, use your available time to head towards Nyksund and Stø, explore Bø or discover other parts of the archipelago before continuing towards Lofoten.

The Norwegian Scenic Route Andøya follows 58 km of exposed western coastline between Andenes and Bjørnskinn, passing beaches, open ocean landscapes and the fishing village of Bleik. With additional time, explore Bleik and its beach, visit viewpoints along the Scenic Route, stop at Bukkekjerka or visit the visitor centre at Andøya Space. Active travellers can also consider hikes such as Måtinden or Høyvika when weather and trail conditions are suitable. Do not try to fit all of these into one morning. Choose according to your interests and how much time you want to leave for the journey towards Lofoten.

There are two practical ways to continue towards Svolvær.
Via Melbu – Fiskebøl
Drive towards Melbu and take the ferry across Hadselfjorden to Fiskebøl. From Fiskebøl, continue along the E10 towards Svolvær.

After travelling through Tromsø, Senja and Vesterålen, protect enough time for Lofoten itself.
Four nights is a reasonable minimum for a first summer visit. It gives you three full days to experience different parts of the archipelago without spending every day driving from one end of the islands to the other. Svolvær is the most practical first base, with Trollfjord cruises, sea eagle safaris, kayaking, fishing experiences and good road connections. With additional time, split your stay between Svolvær and western Lofoten around Reine/Hamnøy rather than repeatedly driving the full length of the archipelago.

If you want to reach Lofoten more directly, travel south from Tromsø through Nordkjosbotn, Målselv and Bardu towards Narvik before continuing west on the E10.
